Completing the NFIRS Structure Fire Report

Completing a structure fire report often starts with these validation messages. The gist of them are: how much was lost in dollars, what was the structure and how did the fire start and spread. Here are the various parts:

Property Loss / Contents Loss

These a "Notice" messages, the values are good to have (e.g. perhaps if you have a fire inspection reports) or you can sometimes calculate loss, but they are not mandatory.

Property Use

Property Use is the standard information in all NFIRS reports, see completing the NFIRS 'Property Use' element.

Structure Type & Building Status

Structure Type is if the structure is enclosed (like a home, versus a car port) and Building Status is if the structure is being lived in.

The rest of the elements ...

The remainder of the elements come from a fire investigation report, or observation or witness statements, as best available. Basically they cover where the fire started, what ignited it, what caught on fire and the overall cause.

Area of Origin - Where it started

Heat Source - What sparked it

Item First Ignited - What ignited

Cause of Ignition - Overall cause
