Cancelled Incidents

An incident that is cancelled is still reportable to NFIRS, if units left the station and began to respond. Based, no doubt, on logic for fire departments with personnel on duty in the station (not volunteer departments responding from home) ... NFIRS does not accept incidents unless apparatus / units are en route. (See NFIRSgram: Dispatched and Canceled en Route)

There are three things you can chose to do:

  • Mark the incident as "NFIRS excluded" to exclude it from NFIRS, per above.
  • Code the incident as a Cancelled En-route Incident Category with apparatus. See "Cancelled" incident category.
  • Code the incident as a Cancelled En-route NFIRS incident type.

'Cancelled' Incident Category

Selecting the "Cancelled" Incident Category sets the correct NFIRS type, and the appropriate NFIRS actions taken.

NOTE: The incident might have been toned as a wildland fire, but if it was cancelled that original categorization is not longer valuable for department records and "cancelled" is sufficient.

'Cancelled' NFIRS Incident Type

Alternatively, leave the Incident Category but override the Incident Type to be "Dispatched & Cancelled En Route".

Note: When administering an incident (in the Admin View) pressing "Admin" scroll down to see the options to easily change the NFIRS incident type.
