What is a Fix an Issue or a Check?
A fix, an issue and a check all convey information about the state of readiness apparatus. A check is typically a scheduled trip to the station to perform the work, whereas an issue and fix are typical come upon.
Issue | There is a problem that needs to be resolved, e.g. engine won't start or pump won't operate. | Ad hoc | Needs to be Resolved |
Fix | There was a problem that you were able to resolve, e.g. engine would not start but is now ok after jump start and application of the battery charger. | Ad hoc | Already Resolved |
Check | A (typically scheduled) check of the apparatus was made and reported upon. | Scheduled | Depends upon status |
Issue / Fix / Check
Issues
Issues are typically come upon, e.g. when attempting to respond to an incident, or during an incident, some malfunction or accident occurred. Issues are something that cannot be resolved by the fire department members, and need to be resolved by the fleet manager / maintenance team. That is an issue.
Fix
Fixes are typically come upon (e.g. when responding or at training) but are resolved before the reporter leaves the apparatus. An engine that won't start could be jump started and put onto a trickle charger. That is a fix. Record fixes so you have a good history of the apparatus, e.g. the battery is on the way out.
Check
A check is typically a schedule event, i.e .a firefighter went to the station in order to perform the check. Keeping track of apparatus checks is important for ISO ratings. Any status impacts are something that cannot be resolved by the members, and need to be resolved by the fleet manager / maintenance team
Resolving an Issues or Check
Any issue or check (that is not "In Service") needs to be "resolved".
